White Paper
This white paper proposes the creation of a new federal office to regulate facial recognition technologies (FRTs). It outlines the societal, technical, and legal challenges associated with FRTs and argues for a comprehensive regulatory framework, drawing parallels with the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approach to medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Key proposals include defining 'intended use,' classifying FRT applications by risk level (low, medium, high), and establishing oversight mechanisms for deployment types and individual deployments to ensure safety, efficacy, and equitable outcomes across diverse populations.
