Charlotte City Council Housing Committee Committee Meeting Summary
The committee meeting focused on a policy referral regarding the Minimum Housing Code and the potential requirement for air conditioning in residential dwellings. Members discussed two options: amending the ordinance to mandate air conditioning or deferring the decision to evaluate existing support programs. The proposed revision included adding inoperable cooling equipment as an imminently dangerous condition and setting a cooling standard for habitable rooms during warmer months. The committee reviewed potential impacts on affordability, utility costs, and the need for additional code enforcement resources. Ultimately, the committee voted to recommend that the full Council consider the option to amend the ordinance to require cooling equipment in residential dwellings.
